Terms of Service
Last updated: August 2, 2026
1. Introduction
Welcome to Matinn! These Terms of Service ("Terms") govern your access to and use of the Matinn website, apps, and services (the "Service"). The Service is operated by Mánahöll ehf. ("Matinn", "we", "us"), an Icelandic company. By creating an account, ticking the acceptance box at sign-up, or continuing to use the Service, you ("you", "user") agree to be bound by these Terms.
Please read them carefully.
2. The Service
Matinn is a meal-planning service for households: weekly meal plans, a recipe library (your own recipes and recipes shared by the community), smart shopping lists, a pantry, and AI-assisted features such as recipe suggestions, recipe import, and meal-plan generation.
3. Accounts and acceptable use
3.1 Registration
You need an account to use most features. You agree to provide accurate information at registration and keep it up to date. You are responsible for all activity on your account and for keeping your sign-in method secure. You must be at least 16 years old to create an account.
3.2 Acceptable use
You agree to use the Service only for lawful, personal or household purposes. You may not:
- Attempt to gain unauthorized access to our systems or other users' data.
- Use the Service in a way that disrupts it or harms other users.
- Scrape, copy, resell, or redistribute content from the Service without written permission from us or from the rights holder of that content.
- Post content that is unlawful, infringing, hateful, or deceptive.
4. Your content
4.1 You keep ownership
Recipes, photos, posts, comments, notes, and other material you submit to the Service ("Your Content") remain yours. We claim no ownership of Your Content.
4.2 License you grant us
So that we can operate the Service, you grant Matinn a worldwide, non-exclusive, royalty-free license to host, store, reproduce, adapt (for example: resizing images, creating thumbnails, translating between languages, generating search data and nutrition estimates), publish, and display Your Content — but only as needed to provide, improve, and promote the Service, and always subject to the visibility settings you choose. Content you keep private is shown only to you and your household. This license ends when you delete the content or your account, except for copies already shared with others at your direction (for example a recipe another user saved from your public profile) and backups kept for a limited period.
4.3 Your promises about Your Content
By submitting content — and especially by making a recipe or photo public — you confirm that:
- You created it yourself, or you have the rights or permission needed to share it here.
- Publishing it on Matinn does not infringe anyone's copyright, trademark, privacy, or other rights.
- Any attestation you make in the product (for example confirming that an imported recipe is your own work) is truthful.
You are responsible for Your Content. If a third party brings a claim against us because content you posted infringed their rights, you agree to compensate us for losses and costs (including reasonable legal fees) that result from your breach of this section.
4.4 A note on recipes and copyright
A bare list of ingredients or a basic method is generally not protected by copyright — but creative recipe text, personal stories, and above all photographs usually are. Do not upload another person's photos or copy another site's recipe text into a public recipe. Write recipes in your own words and use your own images.
5. Imported recipes and third-party content
The Service can import recipes from other websites or from text and photos you provide, for your personal use — like a digital recipe box.
- Recipes imported from a URL are private to your household by default and cannot be published publicly on Matinn unless the original creator has approved public sharing through our creator-consent process. The source is recorded and attributed.
- Recipes imported from text or photos can only be made public if you expressly attest that the recipe is your own work. That attestation is recorded.
- We may remove, re-privatize, or restrict any content at any time if we believe it infringes someone's rights or violates these Terms.
6. Copyright complaints (notice and takedown)
We respect intellectual-property rights and expect users to do the same.
If you believe content on the Service infringes your copyright, send a notice to samband@matinn.is with: (a) identification of the protected work, (b) the URL or location of the infringing content on Matinn, (c) your name and contact details, (d) a statement that you believe in good faith the use is unauthorized, and (e) a statement that the information in your notice is accurate and that you are the rights holder or authorized to act for them.
We will review notices promptly and remove or disable access to infringing content in line with our obligations as a hosting provider under the Icelandic Electronic Commerce Act no. 30/2002. The user who posted the content will normally be informed and may respond. We terminate the accounts of repeat infringers. Content on the Service can also be reported directly through the in-product report function.
7. Our content
The Matinn software, design, brand, editorial content, and content we create (including AI-generated images marked as such) are the property of Mánahöll ehf. or its licensors and are protected by copyright and other laws. We grant you a personal, non-transferable license to use the Service for its intended purpose. Recipes shared by other users belong to their authors — public visibility on Matinn is not a license to republish them elsewhere.
8. Subscriptions, payments, and purchases
- Payment processing: Payments are handled by our merchant of record, Paddle. Paddle's checkout terms apply to the payment transaction itself.
- Plans and renewal: Paid plans are billed in advance per period (monthly or yearly) and renew automatically until cancelled. One-time purchases (such as cookbooks) are charged once.
- Price changes: We may change subscription prices with at least 30 days' notice before they take effect for you.
- Cancellation: You can cancel anytime in your account settings; cancellation takes effect at the end of the paid period.
- Refunds: See our Refund Policy.
9. AI features
Parts of the Service use artificial intelligence to generate suggestions, import and structure recipes, estimate nutrition, and create images. AI output can be inaccurate or incomplete. Always verify ingredients, cooking safety, and — especially — allergy information yourself before relying on it. AI-generated recipe reconstructions and images are marked as such where feasible.
10. No medical or nutrition advice
The Service provides meal ideas and general nutrition estimates. It is not a substitute for professional medical or dietary advice. If you have allergies, medical conditions, or special dietary needs, consult a qualified professional before changing your diet. We accept no liability for health consequences arising from use of the Service.
11. Disclaimer and limitation of liability
The Service is provided "as is" without warranties of any kind. We do not guarantee uninterrupted or error-free operation. To the extent permitted by law, our total liability for direct damages is limited to the amount you paid for the Service in the three months preceding the claim, and we are not liable for indirect or consequential damages.
12. Termination
You may stop using the Service and delete your account at any time. We may suspend or terminate your account if you materially breach these Terms (including repeated copyright infringement), fail to pay, or where required by law. Where reasonable, we will warn you first.
13. Changes to these Terms
We may update these Terms from time to time. We will notify you of material changes by email or in the Service before they take effect. Continued use after the effective date constitutes acceptance of the updated Terms.
14. Governing law and disputes
These Terms are governed by Icelandic law. Disputes that cannot be resolved amicably shall be brought before the District Court of Reykjavík (Héraðsdómur Reykjavíkur). Mandatory consumer-protection rules of your country of residence remain unaffected.
