Food waste is a strange kind of cost — it doesn't show up as a single line on a receipt, so it's easy to underestimate how much a household actually throws away in a month. Wilted greens, forgotten leftovers, and bread gone stale all add up quietly, and most of it is preventable with a few structural habits rather than willpower alone.
Waste rarely comes from one big mistake. It comes from small, repeated ones: buying more than the plan needs, not seeing what's already in the fridge, and storing things in a way that makes them spoil faster than they should. Fixing all three tends to matter more than fixing any one of them perfectly.
The door is the warmest part of the fridge because it opens constantly — it's fine for condiments but not ideal for anything that spoils quickly, like dairy or eggs. Keep those on a proper shelf, ideally toward the back where the temperature is most stable.
Trim the stems and stand herbs in a small jar of water in the fridge, loosely covered with a bag. They'll last noticeably longer than wrapped in plastic on a shelf.

Restaurants live and die by this principle, and it works just as well in a home fridge. Every time you put groceries away, move older items to the front of the shelf and put new ones behind them. It sounds trivial, but it's the single biggest reason identical households waste wildly different amounts of food — one group sees the wilting spinach because it's at eye level, the other loses it behind a fresh bag for a week.
A simple version of this: designate one shelf as your "eat this soon" zone and move anything approaching its use-by date there as soon as you notice it.
The single most effective food-waste habit is checking the fridge before you build the week's meals, not after. A works best when it's built partly around what needs using up — that half-bag of carrots, the last of the mince — rather than treating every week as a blank slate. This does double duty: it reduces waste and reduces how much you need to buy.
